An animal’s behaviour tends to maximize the survival of the genes “for” that behaviour, whether or not those genes happen to be in the body of the particular animal performing it. The logical progression of this theory is awesome, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in evolution and genetics.
Biodiversity is more than a buzzword for ecologists. I needed more basic biology background. This book was written circa 35 years ago.
The Extended Phenotype – Richard Dawkins – Oxford University Press
It remains to be seen, however, whether the idea of extennded EP itself can be extended to become an integral part of a unified theory of evolution, one that fully bridges the gap between genotypes and environments.
Dawkins summarizes these ideas in what he terms the Central Theorem of the Extended Phenotype:.
The second category—host—parasite interactions—involves both the genomes of the host and of the parasite in richard dawkins the extended phenotype attempt to modify the host’s extfnded. The sequel to Dawkin’s The Selfish Gene. Clearly, co-developing partners may induce epigenetic variations in each other.
Eextended it, Dawkins extended the gene’s eye view to argue that the genes that sit within an organism have an influence that reaches out beyond the visible traits in that body – the phenotype – to the wider environment, which can include other individuals.
Pages to import images to Wikidata. This idea appeals to me for several reasons: Apr 17, Paul rated it really liked it. I guess think of it within one species as apposed to multiple species. But with some visual effort, you can make your brain interpret the exact same stimulus as a view from below. Richard dawkins the extended phenotype us for rights and issues inquiries.
This influential and controversial book illuminates the complex world of genetics in an engaging, lively manner. What he and countless richard dawkins the extended phenotype evolutionary biologists observed is that, a phenotype the visible traits of an organism exists solely to benefit the gene responsible for such trait or behavior, and to be quite specific, the active germ-line replicator the potential ancestor of an indefinitely long line of descendents whose nature influences it’s chance of being copied.
Dawkins is a contemporary genius with fresh perspectives in several fields.

So well drilled that we consider something for which richard dawkins the extended phenotype question has no answer to be suspicious if not insidious. It encompasses the idea that the behavioral phenotype of the host can be manipulated by the parasite even if it is not physically associated with the richarx.
The problem with the first half maybe even more of the book, is the content. Dawkins states that genes only care about copies of themselves, not about the welfare of the body-vehicle for all the genes. The book is a richard dawkins the extended phenotype continuation of his devastating book The Selfish Gene.
Hamilton raised another question about how natural selection acts. Much of this hostility arises, I believe, from misunderstanding, or rather, from several misunderstandings.
The Extended Phenotype
But I’m glad I stuck with it, because it gives more depth and perspective on the ideas in the more populist books. National Center for Biotechnology InformationU.
May 07, Bob Anderson rated it it was amazing.
Dawkins is terrific at scientific reasoning, and this was a good outing from him, even by his standards. We comprehend because Dawkins does such an outstanding job in presenting its mechanics. I recommend this book to anyone with a sensationalist view of Nature that wishes to understand the specifics of how Natural Selection and Fitness works. Indeed, since the paper, the EP and niche construction have often been depicted as opposing views, at least until the richard dawkins the extended phenotype ESF conference in which a consensus emerged that the two were more complementary than contradictory, according to Patrizia d’Ettorre, Associate Professor at the Centre for Social Evolution, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, who wrote a richard dawkins the extended phenotype of the meeting.
It’s well worth the hard work, but I’d advise skipping the chapters which seem irrelevant, because they really don’t add much to the book unless you have an interest in those debates. That is all that we ever mean by a gene ‘for’ red eyes. Richard dawkins the extended phenotype suggestion has obvious relevance for the evolution of social behaviour.
